UCLA Men Cruise Past Trojans
The annual dual had four events on tap Saturday morning starting with the Novice eights. USC took off at the start and lead by almost a full length as the crews approached the 1000 meter mark. The Bruins made a move at that point pulling to within a half a length. UCLA drew closer as the crews raced through the third 500 meters eventually pulling even with 600 meters to go. At that point the Bruins took control and sprinted to an open water victory. "When we pulled to a half a length at the 1000 I knew we had a shot at winning. We have a strong second thousand and we have been working very hard on executing it," 6-seat Darius Faizi. The Bruins Second Novice eight lead from the start and cruised to a 24 second win. "We rowed well. We had a great start that got us the lead and we just kept building on it throughout the race. It is a great feeling to win a rivalry," 6-seat Stoycho Stoychev. USC, looking for its first win of the day, jumped out at the start in the Junior Varsity eight race and never looked back beating the Bruins by 11.5 seconds. The Varsity Eight race started out with both crews rowing even off the line when at about 150 meters UCLA stopped. Their fin had come off. After some deliberation, USC agreed to a re-row. Forty minutes later the crews were off again as they rowed even through the first 750 meters. UCLA began to press ahead eventually taking an open water lead with 500 meters to go. "I don't know if it was losing the fin or what but the guys came out very flat today, Head Coach Paul Mokha, I am glad they were able to come up with the win." The Bruins won three of four races in this cross town rivalry a great finish to the 2007 regular season. "It is hard to believe this was my last dual race, senior 2-seat Alex Papanicolaou, this has been a big rivalry and I am glad to have won my final race. Now it is time to focus on the Pac-10 Championships and execute everything we have learned this year." The PCRC/Pac-10 Championships are at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, CA on May 12-13.
