10/07/09 One Stroke at a Time
This week the novice rowers were fully integrated into the team. In each of the six morning practices this week novice and varsity rowers rowed in mixed lineups. The returning guys provided the example of form and intensity for the novices. Afternoon workouts in the weight room and on the erg provided further physical preparation for rowing. Monday was a lift with varsity and novice rowers exerting themselves side by side to complete their sets of dead lifts, incline bench press, pull ups and one legged squats. Wednesday was an interval workout on the erg of 1000m pieces. Each varsity rower partnered with a novice and everyone alternated between rowing their piece and encouraging their partner. Friday ended the week with a 6000m erg test for the entire team, the first true test of the novices? Endurance and strength. Last week they had observed us test, and this week, doing it alongside us I could tell that the novices realized what sort of physical and mental challenges rowing would present them. -Brian Belleville, '11 "One Stroke at a Time" is a weekly update on the Crew, from the pen of a current team member.
10/01/09 One Stroke at a Time
Week One began with a team meeting for all the prospective novices. The current crew explained to a large group of interested and excited men and women what rowing at UCLA is all about. Over the next few days we put the novices through their paces with a series of grueling events to test their strength and stamina. On Wednesday we decided to demonstrate the strength and determination rowing for UCLA requires with a six kilometer ergometer test. The varsity got off to a great start with the vast majority of the team achieving a P.R. (personal record). I remember last year when I was a novice and the first time I saw the varsity erg test. I could see the expressions of pain and fatigue on their faces and still they continued on, undeterred until they hit the digital finish line, and I knew that this was a sport I wanted to be a part of. That type of passion and drive is what I and the other varsity members have been attempting to instill in these potential novices. Based on the excited looks in their eyes when we first took them out on the water this Saturday we have succeeded. I think it's going to be an exciting year for UCLA rowing and I am really looking forward to it. -Sean Cully, '10 "One Stroke at a Time" is a weekly update on the Crew, from the pen of a current team member.
